Rapid and safe vehicle arresting technology

Peter Furness, Sales Manager – Survivability Solutions

As preparation ramps up for the 2016 Olympic Games to be held in Brazil, QinetiQ is proud that one of its survivability products, X-Net® – having been used successfully in London’s 2012 Games – is actively  being considered by Olympic authorities as a solution to help make  International events  secure.

X-Net® has been proven in-service over many years as a reliable and trusted vehicle stopping system. X-Net® is able to bring moving vehicles to a safe and controlled stop. It’s lightweight, can easily be carried by one person, and stops vehicles in a matter of seconds.

X-Net vehicle stopping system

X-Net® is made of a material called Dyneema®, an extremely strong polyethylene used by fishing trawlers and also to anchor supertankers. When X-Net® is used; barbed spikes in the leading edge of the net make contact with the threat vehicle front tyres and the net wraps around the wheels. The net becomes wrapped beneath the vehicle and axle, preventing any further movement of the front wheels either forward or reverse. The result is a safe and controlled halting of the vehicle, which is brought to a standstill under control, with minimum risk to occupants, bystanders and those operating the system.

The X-Net® 3T variant is effective for large cars up to three tonnes, while X-Net 10T is suitable for larger trucks up to 10 tonnes. We are currently considering further development of X-Net to make it suitable for use on even larger tonnage vehicles. The unique technology has proven to be an affordable and reliable tool in the vehicle stopping arsenal of UK and international law enforcement and military forces, in operations such as managing borders, securing areas, and searching for the movement of illegal substances.
